Dubside and DSharp Productions have compiled a wonderful video about modern Greenland kayaking. Part of my teaching philosophy in teaching sea kayaking is appreciating the history and origins of the sport. Sea kayaking is a sport for us, but it was a way of life and a means of survival for hundreds of years. The elders in Greenland wanted to keep their paddling traditions alive. Not only have they succeeded, there has been a growing interest around the world as a result of their hard work. If you are a Greenland style enthusiast or want to become one, I highly recommend this video to get an appreciation of where the sport is today and to see the people who have helped it grow. Not only is the history of the sport reviewed, you get a chance to see the different aspects of the Greenland competitions. One section of the video has Greg Stamer giving excellent points about paddling with a Greenland style paddle. There is a great section showing many different rolls in the competition. This video really gives you the sense of community feeling that is shared by those who embrace this style of kayaking. Even though I am not a Greenland style paddler yet, I am always learning new things from different styles aside from the history.
