Please join me as I share my 50+ years of guiding experience, along with the experiences of my leadership staff and those of my professional guiding friends. During my 25 years as the Director of UCSB’s Adventure Programs, I trained over 1,000 trip leaders/instructors and have personally led over 1,000 adventures. I am sharing this collection of experiences for anyone who is interested in guiding others on an adventure. I am also confident that novice and even seasoned guides will find some nuggets in the book.
This book is not focused on any one type of adventure. Whether you are guiding a backpacking trip, a kayak/canoe outing, a snow camping experience or a guided tour of New York City, there are common leadership skills needed for any adventure, which is the focus of this book. If you have to plan an outing for yourself, your family, your friends, your club or your guiding business, I have included a checklist for Planning Adventures which I have used for years when planning my program’s offerings.
Included in this book:
- Adventure Guide Defined
- Expectations (Recognizing and Setting)
- Hard Skills
- Equipment
- Risk-Management
- Soft Skills of Leadership
- Group Dynamics
- Situational Leadership Model
- Influencing Others
- Leadership Philosophies
- Planning Adventures
- Being the Leader
- Activity Specific Advice
- Incident Adjacent Considerations
In order to be an adventure guide, in your specific activity, your hard skills (climbing, paddling, skiing, biking, scuba diving, etc.) need to be second nature. I have found that skills training courses primarily focus on the hard skills and not the soft skills of leading others. In all of my certification courses, there was very little time (if any) spent on group dynamics, leadership models, guiding philosophies, influencing others, which are some of the soft skills covered in this book. Your hard skills are a science, the soft skills of leadership are an art form. If you want your participants to get the most out of their adventure experience, I highly recommend this book.
