Bracing
The best synonym for brace is support. The reason we use a brace is to get support so we can remain upright. When one sits in a kayak there is a certain degree of stability. That stability can change when the water conditions change. In fact, any change from your external environment can change your stability. In addition any movements on your part can change your stability. Even changing the placement of gear in your kayak can change your stability.
Since there are so many elements that can affect your stability it would be great if you had a number of skills or techniques that can add support when you needed it.
